Intel explains why on their website here: I inadvertently messed up the installation of the Video Drivers and before I had a chance to correct the error the Windows 10 compatibility software gave the laptop a passing grade.
I later found that you can use the standard Windows XP driver if you run the setup program in XP compatibility mode. Thanks for marking this as the answer.

I ran the upgrade using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter in place of the Intel drivers and everything has checked out fine so far. In reply to Geethu B’s post on June 12, This thread is locked.
